Kratom powder boasts a variety of benefits, including increased energy and a good mood. But, adding kratom powder to your daily meal plan can be a bit of a challenge. Here is what you need to know about kratom powder and a few tips on adding kratom to your daily diet.
What Is Kratom?
Kratom is derived from a tree that grows in parts of South Asia, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand.
Several types of kratom have been identified to have unique properties, including green, red, and white kratom. The types of kratom have been named from the vein coloring on the original kratom plant. Likewise, kratom may also be named based on the region where it is derived.
Is Kratom Safe?
Kratom has been used for generations in Southeast Asia for its medicinal properties. However, the FDA has not yet approved kratom, and science is still trying to understand its effects and potential side effects, including nausea, itching, constipation, dry mouth, and loss of appetite. If you are thinking about adding kratom to your diet, we recommend that you consult a doctor- especially if you are already taking other medications.
Kratom Serving Size
If you are looking to incorporate kratom into your diet, we recommend starting with a small servings and working your way up. This helps ensure that you are not overwhelming your system. Starting slowly also helps ensure that you are avoiding the side effects.
Small Servings
When starting out, the recommended serving size is 2 grams. However, if you have a sensitive system, you can start with as low as one and then work your way up. The high-end of a small kratom serving is 4 grams, which has been reported to support a sense of ease.
Large Servings
If you’re accustomed to using kratom, you can take as much as 5 grams. Note that the effects of the kratom are stronger at this serving size and that you also have a greater risk of potential adverse side effects if you go a little over, which is why we recommend using exact serving sizes, or lower.
While the above serving size guidelines are helpful, you should always use kratom powder as directed by the manufacturer. Kratom types vary in potency, meaning that some strands will be stronger than others. White kratom, for instance, is generally known to be more potent than other types. The manufacturer will know the types and potency of kratom in their product and will likely recommend a serving size.
Kratom Formulations
Kratom can be ingested in various ways, and there is no single ‘best’ method. Here are just a few options:
- Kratom powder
- Kratom tea
- Kratom capsules
- Kratom-infused drinks
How to Take Kratom Powder
Kratom powder has been described as bitter-tasting by some and earthy by others. But, while the powder might not taste good to everyone, there are ways to adapt the powder to your meals-time that is both delicious and efficient:
Mixed With a Beverage
While kratom powder doesn’t taste amazing on its own, it does well when mixed with a beverage. If you like a drink that tastes a little bitter, or if you’re curious about the taste, you can add the powder to a glass of water. However, if you want something to mask the taste, consider:
- Orange Juice: Orange juice is delicious and nutritious. Of course, not all orange juice is going to be super sweet. In fact, natural orange juices contain significantly less sugar and more of a citrus taste. Whatever the case, orange juice and kratom are a great mix.
- Lemonade: Another delicious citrusy drink that works well with kratom is lemonade.
- Coffee: Coffee and kratom are great together because coffee naturally has such a strong taste.
- Tea: While you can brew kratom into tea, mixing kratom into a strong and flavorful tea can also work.
While the above are good suggestions, you can also mix kratom with your other drinks, such as smoothies and milkshakes. Remember that having some food in your system when you take kratom is always a good idea, and you don’t want to ingest acidic drinks on an empty stomach so, if you’re mixing kratom powder with your morning coffee or juice, make sure that you have something to eat as well.
Mixed With Food
Kratom is excellent in drinks, but it can also be taken with food. Due to its unique taste, kratom can be great in a variety of foods. While we encourage kratom users to experiment, we have a few suggestions:
Mixed With Chocolate
Chocolate is a natural combination of bitter and sweet. If you have the time, you can create a concoction of kratom powder and chocolate by melting the chocolate and mixing it with the powder. If you love your chocolate sweet, consider milk or white chocolate, which is naturally more sweet than bitter. You can also sprinkle a little bit of powder on your chocolate and take it in small serving sizes.
Baked Into Cookies
Cookies can be as sweet as you make them, and chocolate chip cookies especially are a great way to balance out any bitterness in the kratom powder. When baking, make sure that you are using an appropriate serving size. Note that you may want to put a special label on the kratom cookies if you have other people in your household to keep them from being accidentally ingested.
Sprinkled Over Savory Dishes
You can also sprinkle kratom powder into your savory dishes. Again, you will need to be careful with the serving size. We recommend opting for 2-3 grams. Before you add kratom to a savory dish, we recommend that you try a bit of kratom powder with water to get an idea of the taste.
